E-Mail to Evernote

I fixed some other flaws in my version of the Send E-Mail to Evernote.scpt:

Update 22 dec 2014:
- I repaired a situation where a piece of a HTML-email 'header' is no header, but contains a <style> … </style> segment, which contains semi-colons and which does not contain ampersands. And that is where the script crashed. This is the case with 'Order confirmation'-emails coming from DAZ 3D. I added the test if the part does also not contain a } and then it went through. Fixed. Now wait for the next email-formatting-idiocrazy for which the script has no solution.

ICSviewer updated to 2.2

The ical calendar file viewer ICS Viewer is updated to version 2.2.

A crash when no DTEND entry was present has been repaired. This seems to be possible with Google Calendar events.
 

SwitchAds

Today I implemented my new SwitchAds account on this page and the sitemap page. It works by placing an ad, like Google AdSense, but if no bidder for your space was found, SwitchAds places your asynchronous Google AdSense code in that space.

Sounds great, now let’s wait and see …
 

Leer jezelf programmeren

Ik zag dat mijn ooit geschreven boeken en artikelen nog niet op de site stonden. Lang geleden heb ik een poging ondernomen het boek 'Leer jezelf programmeren' uit te geven, is niet gelukt: het was te algemeen. Nu dus gratis te downloaden!

Pizzeria La Grotta in Mettmann, Germany

Als u ooit in de buurt van Mettmann bent, de Neanderthal-vindplaats, dan is het zeker de moeite waard om in het centrum van de stad bij Pizzeria La Grotta (Lutterbecker Str. 4, Mettmann) te gaan eten. Fantastisch lekkere pizza’s en mooie salades. Ik stelde zelf een salade samen en de kok kwam het mij zelf brengen, uit nieuwsgierigheid wie zoiets had gevraagd ;-)

Wenn Sie schon einmal in der Nähe von Mettmann sind, dem Neanderthal-Fundstelle, dann ist es definitiv die Mühe wert im Zentrum der Stadt bei Pizzeria La Grotta (Lutterbecker Str. 4, Mettmann) essen zu gehen. Fantastisch leckere Pizza und schöne Salate. Ich hatte selbst einen Salat zusammengestellt und der Koch brachte es mir selbst, aus Neugier, wer so etwas gefragt hatte ;-)

Cool Unix-Shell Prompt

At the shell-prompt in Terminal or some SSH session, copy/paste the following line: export PS1="\n\u@\h \A \w $ " and see the following nice shell-prompt:

Payleven mobiele pin-reader

Sinds kort is er een prachtig mobiel pin-apparaat op de markt dat via bluetooth met je iPhone werkt: Payleven.
Op je iPhone draait de transactie-software terwijl het pin-apparaat uitsluitend de software heeft om de kaart te lezen, PIN te verifiëren en de toetsenbord-input naar de iPhone door te sturen.



Werkt prima!

Wel zorgen dat:

• het apparaat is opgeladen,
• je iPhone is opgeladen,
• je een opgeladen accu meeneemt voor je iPhone,
• er een internet-verbinding is (WiFi/WLAN of 3G/4G; GPRS gaat nog wel, is alleen heel erg traag).

Put your Calibre eBooks on iPhone, wherever you are

When you're traveling and want to read that specific eBook which you forgot to put on your iPhone or iPad before you started the trip, then you need the following solution: CrashPlan or Dropbox!


I store all my eBooks in Calibre and Calibre stores them in /Users/<you>/Library/Application Support/Calibre/ and that folder is backed up too with CrashPlan. That is step 1.

With CrashPlan, you can (and should) backup all your data, music and movies automatically on unlimited cloud-storage so your data is backed up outside of your home or work environment. And thus also your eBooks! That is step 2.

And the guys at CrashPlan created an very nice iOS app with which you can access your backup on their cloud-storage from anywhere ... and download files from there onto your iPhone or iPad! And thus also your eBooks! That is step 3.

To illustrate what I mean, I put together an image sequence to illustrates the steps to take to download an eBook from your own backup onto your iPhone or iPad.

Very cool and very handy!

I use this method also when I want to email any file which I have on my desktop at home - I download it from CrashPlan and then email it ... from my iPhone. No need to setup remote login to my iMac, no need to setup screen sharing, etc..

Of course there are other ways, but since this one is completely automatic and also backs up ALL our data, it is my preferred off-site storage solution.

Slide Shows of Events

Vanaf vandaag voeg ik dia-voorstellingen van evenementen en thema's aan mijn 'Fotoshop' webpagina toe. Ik zal ook panorama's en films bijvoegen als ik die heb gemaakt.

De eerste voorstelling toont foto's van de auto-rodeo in Wilp-Achterhoek.
De tweede voorstelling gaat over het Tractor Pulling evenement in Ameland.

As of today I am adding slide shows of events and themes to my 'Fotoshop' web page. I shall also include panoramas and movies if I made them.

The first slide show is of a car rodeo in Wilp-Achterhoek.
The second show is about Tractor Pulling at Ameland.

Foto's uit militaire dienst van 1981 bij mijn OYPO webshop

Het werd weer tijd om mijn OYPO webshop uit te breiden. De toegevoegde foto's zijn gemaakt tijdens mijn militaire diensttijd in 1981, toen ik ook nog aan modelbouw deed.

Wireless network connections in hotels and on the road

If you ever try to be smart and add some hi-speed DNS servers to your WiFi DNS settings ... don't. I thought I was and the last months I have been wondering why I couldn't connect to wireless LANs in hotels and trains - and they didn't know either.

Today, at Hotel BB (good hotel btw) they put me in contact with their WiFi-provider and after a going through every detail, we found the reason: my manual DNS entries. Why did I put them there? Well, at home I sometimes use NameBench to find the best DNS-servers. And since Google's DNS servers are mostly the fastest, I thought it a good thing to add those two (8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4) permanently to the DNS of my WiFi connection! Which then blocked and confused the routers in the hotels I was staying or the trains on which I travelled. And I thought what a shitty stuf do these guys have... hum hum ;-)

So.... I created a separate location for when I am mobile and I called it Mobile (DHCP). I leave it totally empty so routers in hotels and trains can discuss with my Macbook Pro what is the best connection and which DNS-servers to use. Here's how in images:


 

 

 

 

 
and click Apply when the Mac asks you to!

Now, whenever I go out and take my MacBook Pro with me, I first choose this Mobile (DHCP) location so whatever WiFi-router I connect to, I have a good chance for internet access.
 

E-Mail to Evernote

I fixed some other flaws in my version of the Send E-Mail to Evernote.scpt:

Update 13 aug 2014:
- I repaired a situation where there is no content-type found in the email headers. I now set it to text/plain in such a case.

Update 5 aug 2014:
- I repaired the strange time formatting (1=3=4=5 instead of 1345) when adding multiple email messages at once.
- And I added a dialog when the script has successfully finished processing for when Growl is not active.

Quickly transfer MySQL databases to a new server

Again I needed to transfer all data from one server to another. I knew I documented the transfer of MySQL databases somewhere (it's deep inside in the Replication-how-to) and decided to post them again here, so they're quicker to find.

One can transfer MySQL databases in various ways:

1. Using mysqldump and zip + ftp
2. Zip the database itself + ftp (you might need to repair the tables after unzipping)
3. Use Navicat's Data Transfer module (not always good for tables with millions of records or blob data)

Personally, I prefer to use option 2, like below, in Terminal or an SSH session:

$ cd /var/mysql/ (or /var/lib/mysql/)
$ sudo zip -r ~/[database].zip [database]

Do this for each database that you want to copy. Then send all zip's per FTP to the new server.
Start an SSH session with the remote server and enter the following commands:

$ cd /var/mysql (or /var/lib/mysql/)
$ sudo unzip ~/[database].zip
$ sudo chown -R _mysql:admin [database]

For the above chown, check first with ls -l if _mysql:admin are the right owners. Then do this for each unzipped database.

Next, start Navicat and now you should see your databases in the connection of the new server. If not, you probably forgot to either do a Refresh Connection or the chown-command.

If you can access the tables and view data, good! If not, right click the table and choose Maintain->Repair Table->Quick or ->Extended and then try again.
 

E-Mail to Evernote

I fixed a bug in the Send E-Mail to Evernote.scpt where it would crash if the HTML at some point would contain &nbsp; or other ISO encoded characters. You can download a new version here.

If you maintain your own changes in this script, here's the fix. Change the following lines inside the function htmlFix:

     --TEST FOR / STRIP OUT LEADING SEMI-COLON
     if item 1 of paraSource contains ";" then

into this:

     --TEST FOR / STRIP OUT LEADING SEMI-COLON (skip &nbsp; stuff)
     if item 1 of paraSource contains ";" and item 1 of paraSource does not contain "&" then

Mijn foto van de Spookeik op de website van de Bomenstichting

Ben ik vorig jaar begonnen mijn fotografie-hobby weer op te pakken en dit jaar mijn Fotoshop op te zetten om mijn foto's te verkopen voor op leuke dingen, komt vanzelf de aanvraag voor het gebruik van een mijner foto's voor een advertentie van de Bomenstichting en hebben zij mijn foto op de homepage van de Bomenstichting geplaatst! Wat een eer!



De Bomenstichting zet zich in voor het behoud van bomen in Nederland en biedt ondersteuning aan Nederlanders die ondersteuning zoeken in de 'strijd' tegen (semi-)overheden en/of buren die graag bomen willen omzagen. Bomen zijn belangrijk voor een goed klimaat en mooie, oude bomen zijn ook nog eens een lust voor het oog en alleen al daarom zou men zich drie keer moeten bedenken voordat de zaag er in gaat.

Wilt u helpen voorkomen dat overheden en gemeenten kaalslag propageren boven behoud bij nieuwe projecten of zgn. regulier onderhoud?

Dodewaard foto's uit 1980 bij mijn OYPO webshop

Ik heb weer wat nieuwe foto's uit mijn archief aan mijn OYPO webshop toegevoegd. Deze zijn mooi donker en dreigend, gemaakt met een 400ASA zwart/wit film. De grove korrel komt mooi naar voren.



De serie is gemaakt op 19-10-1980 tijdens de demonstratie tegen de kerncentrale in Dodewaard.

Mooi weer bij de jaarlijke rommelmarkt in Zutphen

Dit jaar was het weer een mooie dag voor de jaarlijkse rommelmarkt in de Spittaalstraat in Zutphen. Druk en erg gezellig.

E-Mail to Evernote

A while ago i was looking for a way to shrink my list of mailboxes and the 1000s of mails therein. I already use MailSteward Pro to backup my emails to a remote MySQL server, but that is just in case everything gets lost at Apple's iCloud. Which isn't very likely.

Since my Apple Mail is starting to crash every few days since the latest Mavericks updates and is getting really slow in opening old and getting new mail (although I run on SSD), I am looking for another way to archive old emails and still have the same easy access with all search capabilities. This where Evernote comes in! Googling a bit I found this AppleScript: Apple Mail to Evernote.

The script works perfectly under Mavericks and I added some code to get the date/time in the title of the note. A screenshot of how an email in Evernote looks when my modified version of the script has done its job:



What you'll miss though is the grouping of the 'Conversation'-view which you have in Apple Mail.

Nieuwe oudjes toegevoegd aan mijn fotoshop

Ik heb weer even de tijd genomen om verder te gaan met mijn fotoshop. Vandaag heb ik foto's toegevoegd uit 1980, gemaakt tijdens de kroning van prinses Beatrix te Amsterdam. Neem eens een kijkje, misschien herken je iemand en schenk je hem of haar, of jezelf, een poster van een foto!

Allow LoginWindow only for some users on Mac OS X Server

Looking for the way to disallow regular users to login via VNC or Apple Remote Desktop?

- Open Server Admin in /Applications/Server/
- Connect to and select your server.
- 10.5 Server: select Settings -> Access
- 10.7 Server: select Access
- Then select Services -> For selected services below -> Login Window.
- Then select Allow only users and groups below on the right, and add yourself and whoever else you want to grant access.

Photex Tilt Shift Micro Four Thirds M4/3

Lang voor het digitale tijdperk gebruikte ik een 35mm tilt-shift Canon-lens op mijn Canon A1-body. Deze dagen zijn nu voorbij en dit jaar heb ik een Panasonic Lumix GF6 aangeschaft. Natuurlijk miste ik de tilt-shift lens en ben gelijk op zoek gegaan en vond na lang zoeken op Amazon de enige tilt-shift voor de M4/3-bajonet, van Photex. Mocht iemand een andere tilt-shift voor M4/3 weten, laat mij dat dan a.u.b. in een commentaar weten. Deze lens is geheel handmatig - geen automatische scherpstelling etc.. Dus ben ik erg blij dat de GF6 een 'geen lens'-modus heeft, waardoor ik lenzen zonder ingebouwde computer-technologie kan gebruiken. Helaas geen 35mm maar 50mm, dus ik moet wat meer afstand nemen van echt hoge gebouwen, maar verder werkt hij prima.

In the old days I used a 35mm Canon tilt-shift on my A1-body. Those days are over now and this year I went for the Panasonic Lumix GF6. Of course I need to rebuild my collection of lenses to get back on track, only digital now. I am very happy that the GF6 has a 'no lens'-mode for lenses without any built-in computer-technology, like this 50mm Photex tilt-shift lens. Completely manual operation and it works great!

I moved the disk covers from the old blog post + some new covers I found to this separate web page. If you have some floppy covers that are not listed, you can mail an image and I'll add it to the collection.

Las Moras - Black Label 2009

I got this wine from an old friend. I must really say that this is a very, very nice wine! When I looked up the Las Moras winery on the internet, it turned out they produce some of the best wines and also win various medals! So, if you can lay your hands on it, you certainly should take the opportunity and try it!
